What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is the primary male hormone responsible for sexual development and overall health. It plays a key role in regulating libido, muscle mass, bone density, and red blood cell production in males. While primarily associated with men, testosterone is also important for women, where it contributes to muscle strength, bone health, libido, and well-being. An imbalance in testosterone levels can negatively affect both reproductive and overall health in men and women.

Why is Testosterone Important?

In men, testosterone affects sexual function, muscle mass, bone density, and mood. Low testosterone levels can result in reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and other physical and emotional symptoms. In women, although testosterone levels are lower, it remains essential for maintaining muscle mass, bone strength, and sexual health. Both high and low levels can cause reproductive or health issues, making regular monitoring important.

Understanding Testosterone Levels:

Testosterone can be measured as total testosterone (bound and free) or free testosterone (unbound). Free testosterone is more bioactive and can be a better indicator of certain symptoms, even if total testosterone is normal.

Normal Testosterone Levels:

  • Males:
    • Total testosterone:
      • Age 20-49: 3.0 – 10.8 ng/mL
      • Age 40-60: 3.0 – 8.9 ng/mL
      • Age 60+: 3.0 – 7.2 ng/mL
    • Free testosterone (18+): 0.047 – 0.244 ng/mL
  • Females:
    • Normal serum testosterone: 0.18 – 0.54 ng/mL

Testosterone levels naturally follow a diurnal rhythm, peaking in the morning. Low testosterone is more common with age, obesity, type 2 diabetes, or chronic illnesses. In women, high testosterone may indicate conditions like PCOS, while low levels may be linked to early menopause or adrenal issues.

How to Maintain Optimal Testosterone Levels:

  • Diet: Include fenugreek, ashwagandha, and zinc-rich foods to support healthy testosterone levels.
  • Lifestyle: Reduce stress, improve sleep, and engage in regular exercise to help maintain balanced testosterone.
  • Supplements: Saw palmetto, boron, and other natural supplements can help regulate testosterone.

DISCLAIMER:

If you are concerned about your testosterone levels always consult a physician.
