Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG)Updated 3 months ago
What is Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG)?
SHBG is a protein made by the liver that binds to sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen, controlling their activity. Only unbound (free) hormones are active and usable by tissues.
Why is SHBG important?
Included in SiPhox Health's Hormone+ panel, SHBG affects hormone availability. In men, high SHBG reduces free testosterone, causing issues like low libido and erectile dysfunction. In women, low SHBG results in excess active testosterone, which may cause acne, irregular menstruation, or excess hair growth.
Understanding SHBG levels:
- Males: 13.3-89.5 nmol/L
- Females (menstruating): 18.2-135.5 nmol/L
- Females (menopausal): 16.8-125.2 nmol/L
Factors like pregnancy, liver disease, obesity, and insulin resistance can affect SHBG levels. Consult your physician if concerned about your results.
Maintaining optimal SHBG levels:
- Diet: Increase protein to lower SHBG; increase fiber and healthy fats to raise it.
- Lifestyle: Quit smoking, reduce alcohol, and maintain a healthy BMI to regulate SHBG.
- Supplements: Boron can lower elevated SHBG; vitamin D can help raise low SHBG.

If you are concerned about your SHBG levels always consult your physician.
