FolateUpdated 3 months ago

What is folate?
Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9, while folic acid is its synthetic form found in supplements and fortified foods. Both are essential for cell growth, breaking down homocysteine, and fetal development.

Why is folate important?
Folate is crucial for reducing birth defect risks by forming the neural tube, especially for those pregnant or trying to conceive. It also supports brain function and may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and depression.

Folate levels:

  • Reference range: 2.7 – 17.0 ng/mL (> 3 ng/mL is considered adequate).

Maintaining optimal folate levels:

  • Recommended intake: 400 mcg daily for adults, 600 mcg for pregnant adults (no more than 1000 mcg).
  • Diet: Foods like spinach, peas, grains, and liver are rich in folate, or you can take supplements.

Disclaimer:

If you are concerned about your folate levels always consult your physician.
